A Journey of Resilience: Elaina’s Fight Against Cancer and the Role of Therapy at Allied Services Pediatric Rehab Centers

For any parent, hearing the words “your child has cancer” is a nightmare. For Elaina’s family, that nightmare became reality when their beautiful baby girl was diagnosed with Grade 4 Medulloblastoma, a rare and aggressive brain tumor, at just 17 months old. It’s hard to imagine how life can change in a single moment. Still, for Elaina and her family, that moment brought an entirely new reality—one filled with hospital stays, surgeries, and endless treatments.

The Start of Elaina’s Fight

On March 9, 2022, Elaina was rushed to The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) from her local hospital in Scranton. Her brain tumor was so large that it was putting immense pressure on her brain, and immediate surgery was necessary to relieve that pressure. Over the next ten months, Elaina underwent multiple surgeries, chemotherapy, and even a stem cell transplant to fight her cancer.

Through it all, she stayed strong, smiling even on her hardest days. But one of the most heartbreaking parts of her journey was not just the treatment—Elaina had to relearn how to walk, talk, and perform basic movements after her tumor was removed. Like many families facing a cancer diagnosis, Elaina’s family didn’t initially think of therapy as part of the recovery process, but for her, it became essential.

The Role of Therapy in Recovery

After months of surgeries and chemotherapy, Elaina’s brain had to rewire itself, leaving her without many of the skills she had already mastered as a toddler. She had to start from scratch—learning to crawl, speak, and even use her hands again. This is where Allied Services John P. Moses Esq. Pediatric Rehab Centers came into play.

For the past two years, Elaina has been a patient at Allied Services, receiving critical Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Physical Therapy to help her rebuild her strength and regain her abilities. It’s easy to overlook therapy as part of a cancer journey, but for children like Elaina, it’s often the key to regaining a sense of normalcy after months—or even years—of treatment.

Speech Therapy: Rediscovering Her Voice

Before therapy, Elaina’s speech was extremely limited. After her surgeries, she had to relearn how to form words and express herself. Through Speech Therapy, she has made remarkable progress. The dedicated speech therapists at Allied Services have helped her blossom by focusing on her speech and supporting her confidence. She went from a child who could barely speak to one who could now communicate her thoughts and emotions more clearly.

Her progress is a testament to the power of specialized, child-focused therapy. Elaina’s family shares that seeing her ability to communicate grow over the last two years has been one of the most rewarding aspects of her journey.

Occupational Therapy: Strengthening the Body and Mind

Elaina’s Occupational Therapy sessions have focused on improving her fine motor skills, which were also severely affected by her brain surgeries. She has built incredible strength in her hands and arms in the past two years. These therapies have helped her with daily tasks like holding objects and using utensils and improved her ability to problem-solve and be independent.

Occupational therapy goes beyond the physical—helping children gain independence and confidence in navigating the world around them. For Elaina, every session has been another step toward reclaiming her abilities and developing new ones.

Physical Therapy: The Road to Walking Again

Perhaps one of Elaina's biggest hurdles is relearning how to walk. After her tumor was removed, she lost much of her physical strength and balance. The incredible Physical Therapy team at Allied Services has been working with Elaina to help her rebuild the muscles in her legs and improve her balance.

Over the past two years, she has gotten stronger and faster, and although she isn’t walking just yet, her therapists and family are hopeful that it’s just around the corner. Every day brings her closer to that milestone.
