Careers in Focus: Food Services

Nicole Sworen, BS, CDM of Hanover Township has worked in Food Services for more than 16 years, all at the same facility.

“I love the residents. It’s a fast-paced job but at the same time I get to perfect my skills” says Nicole. “And I’ve come to know what my residents love and how to bring them joy with my food.”

Nicole is Director of Dietary Services at Allied Services Meade Street Skilled Nursing in Wilkes-Barre. She fell into the profession quite by chance while in high school. Her friend started working at Meade Street Residence (formerly Little Flower Manor), and Nicole joined her. She found the work rewarding and in time, came to know many of the residents and enjoy the challenge of improving the service she was providing.

“It’s a rewarding job and it really gives you the chance to prove to yourself what kind of person you are and what your work ethic is,” says Nicole.

Nicole began as a Dietary Aide, working nights. In time, she moved to the day shift, then graduated to Cook, and then took the opportunity to become a Supervisor when it was offered to her. With the support of her boss, Nicole embarked on studying to become a Certified Dietary Manager (CDM). She completed the training, which usually takes 1 and a half years, in just over 3 months, and successfully earned her CDM certificate. She also attended Penn State University for Criminal Justice.

Today, she oversees the food services team at a busy skilled nursing facility, helping to make new team members feel welcome like she did 16 years ago.

“This is a job that a lot of people will enjoy. Because we’re very flexible with schedules, it can work for students, retirees looking for just a few hours a week, even parents with young children and a busy lifestyle” says Nicole.

Allied Services offers sign-on bonuses up to $250 for Dietary Aides and Food Services Workers. To learn more about opportunities in Scranton and Wilkes-Barre call 570-348-1481 or apply online here
