Careers in Focus: Resident Assistants in Carbondale

Emma Connolly of Mayfield is studying to be a Physician’s Assistant. That’s what led her to join Allied Services. Emma is a Resident Assistant on the care team at Allied Services group home in Carbondale.

“I knew people at Allied Services and they recommended this job for me,” says Emma. “I needed patient care hours for my studies and this was a way to do that. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the work. I’ve loved the whole experience.”

Emma was initially hesitant. She had never done anything like this before and was anxious that she wouldn’t enjoy it. Once she met the residents and other staff, she knew it was the right thing for her.

Resident Assistants help with activities of daily living. They help prepare meals, go on outings with the residents, help them get dressed and groom themselves. They’re an extra set of hands, someone to guide and support the residents.

“What I would tell someone starting this job is to be patient with yourself and with the client” comments Emma. “The more that you do the work the more confident you’ll become.”

Emma has found that she can juggle working and studying, and finds her supervisors and the schedule accommodating. She’s discovered a purpose in her work, something she wasn’t expecting when she started looking for a way to earn money and patient care hours for her studies.

“We all have good days and bad days, and you’re to help the resident no matter what kind of day they’re having. This kind of work can be so personally rewarding. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a new opportunity. ”

Resident Assistants earn up to a $1000 sign-on bonus at Allied Services. The new hourly rates start at $15.00 per hour for full-time and part-time positions with weekend shifts earning up to $17.00 per hour. Shift differentials are offered on the second and third shifts.
