Careers in Focus: Social Services

For Melissa Pedriani, BSW, acting as an advocate for patients and residents is the most important and rewarding part of her profession.

Melissa is Assistant Director of Social Services at Allied Services Skilled Nursing Center in Scranton. She has worked in the skilled nursing setting for more than a decade. She joined Allied Services in 2014 and was promoted to her current role in 2019.

“The Social Services team plays a unique role. We’re the go-between for residents, family members, and our facility” says Melissa. “Oftentimes, that means helping to resolve an issue, but it also means being part of the exciting and rewarding moments, like when a resident gets to go home.”

Social Workers at the Skilled Nursing Center are an important part of the discharge planning process. They help to educate and prepare both the resident and the family members. They help to order any equipment that might be needed and guide family members on how to prepare their home, all to ensure a safe discharge. Social Workers maintain a relationship with the residents after they return home, following up with them to check on their progress.

“All of our residents have their own stories” comments Melissa. “It’s our job to listen to the residents, hear their concerns, and be their advocate.”

Melissa acknowledges that the skilled nursing setting can be very challenging, especially now when there are so many restrictions. However, she knows that her work is valuable and much needed.

“Every day is different, which keeps it interesting and fast-paced. There’s a great team environment at the skilled nursing center and you know that you have back-up and people to turn to for help.”

Although Melissa has already completed her Bachelors's Degree, she knows that the support that Allied Services offers for continuing education makes this a great place to work.
