Careers in Focus: Skilled Nursing

"All of the residents that I care for are amazing. It’s rewarding to take care of them, and I usually help them with personal care. The thing I love the most though is making them smile. No other feeling can match the one I get when I joke around with my residents and they start laughing or I can see that they’re having fun. I love making their stay more comfortable for them.”

That’s Christine Daniel telling us about her work as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Allied Services. Christine started out in the laundry at Allied Services. She soon discovered that she loved talking to and interacting with the residents. She then became a Resident Care Assistant at our Personal Care Home, Meade Street Residence, in Wilkes-Barre.

When the opportunity arose to take the CNA class, she seized it.

“I worked in laundry for about five months. Throughout this time, I realized how much I liked interacting with residents. I decided to start looking ahead, and I tried to take Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) classes. They weren't open yet when I applied, so I stuck with it until I managed to grab a spot.”

The 4-week paid training class prepares participants for the examination and for providing care under the direction of the nursing team. Once she qualified as a CNA, she began working in the Skilled Nursing Center at Meade Street.

Christine not only loves interacting with the residents; she also enjoys the support and camaradie of her co-workers.

“It’s not just the residents that make my time here at Allied amazing. All of my coworkers are great people too. Everyone works as a team and they’re more than ready to help me out if I ever need it. My supervisors are amazing too. They’re always super supportive of me.”
