Arthritis Rehab in Scranton and Wilkes-Barre
Treatment to Manage Symptoms & Slow Down Progression
Arthritis is a chronic pain condition that gets progressively work over time. There is not yet a cure for arthritis, but the condition can be managed and slowed down through treatment and rehabilitation.
Patients with arthritis will experience continuous inflammation of the joints. Inflamed joints will experience pain, stiffness, and swelling. A person can develop arthritis is virtually any joint, including the wrists, fingers, toes, ankles, shoulders, and hips. Although most common in the elderly, arthritis can affect people of any age group.
The most common types of arthritis include:
- Osteoarthritis – This is the most common type of arthritis. This arthritis develops gradually over time as the cartilage between joints is exposed to wear and tear.
- Fibromyalgia – This is a more widespread form of arthritis that affects the musculoskeletal system. It is often accompanied by fatigue and sleeping problems.
- Rheumatoid arthritis – This form of arthritis can affect the joints and other areas of the body. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder, meaning it occurs when the body’s immune system starts attacking healthy tissues.
At Allied Services Integrated Health System we provide treatment for these and other types of arthritis, including gout, lupus, and spondylitis.
How Rehabilitation Works
Arthritis rehabilitation is focused on managing the symptoms and delaying the progression of arthritis. The ultimate goal is to eliminate pain altogether so that patients can enjoy a higher quality of life. These programs are typically recommended for patients who are suffering from chronic pain and stiffness.
Arthritis rehabilitation programs may include:
- Stretching
- Mobility exercises
- Hot and cold therapy
- Strength exercises
- Aerobic condition
- Aquatic therapy
- Stress management
- Nutritional counseling
It is important to explore the least invasive treatments for arthritis before considering surgery. Patients can delay the need for surgery for years, or even avoid it altogether, with an arthritis rehabilitation program. It depends on the severity of the condition, how far it has progressed, and how willing the body is to respond to exercise and other conservative treatments.
