Gait Disorder Treatment Scranton and Wilkes-Barre
Correcting an Abnormal Walk Pattern
A gait disorder is a condition that makes it difficult to walk. These conditions can be caused by neurologic or musculoskeletal conditions such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy. Gait disorders are common in senior patients, with roughly 20% of geriatric patients being afflicted. These numbers rise as patients get older, with more than 62% of patients over the age of 80 being diagnosed.
Gait disorders increase a patient’s risk for falling and injuring themselves. Allied Services Integrated Health System provides treatment and rehabilitation for patients with gait disorders to prevent this from happening.
Types of Gait Disorders
There are five primary types of abnormal gaits. Treatment will vary depending on the type and severity of the patient’s gait disorder.
The primary types of abnormal gaits include:
- Spastic gait – Dragging the heel or foot when walking
- Steppage gait – Toes that point downward and scrape across the ground when walking
- Scissors gait – Legs that bend, cross, and hit each other in a crisscross pattern when walking
- Propulsive gait – Walking with the head and neck pushed forward
- Waddling gait – Moving from side to side when walking
Gait disorders can be temporary or permanent, depending on the cause. Depending on the type of condition, the goal of rehabilitation will be to either correct the gait or learn techniques to avoid injury.
Treatment Approach
Gait disorders can be caused by injuries, foot problems, arthritis, neurological disorders, and various other conditions. Treatment may be focused on treating the underlying condition or, if the condition cannot be cured, helping patients manage the symptoms that result in an abnormal gait. Treatment may involve physical therapy, leg braces, learning how to use crutches or canes, and more.
