Hospice & Palliative Care

Long-Term and End-of-Life Care

Whether you're looking for extra support as you live life with a chronic illness or need support caring for a loved one in their final days, our caring, compassionate staff are here to help. Allied Services Hospice & Palliative Care offers expert medical and emotional support with respect for the patient's and family's wishes.

Allied Services provides care that embraces life with dignity and respect. We offer the highest quality compassionate hospice and palliative care services to people in the Scranton and Wilkes-Barre regions.

Although hospice and palliative services are similar, they serve two different needs.

  • Hospice care is for patients who are in the final stages of life. Hospice care professionals focus on improving patients' comfort and quality of life and providing them and their families with emotional support during this difficult time.
  • Palliative care is a long-term program for patients with chronic medical conditions. These treatments are focused on improving patient comfort and managing symptoms rather than treating the primary condition. Palliative care is not hospice care, as patients and their care teams still plan on helping the patient recover.

Five-star care when every moment matters

When the times comes, one of the most important decisions you can make for yourself or your loved one is who will provide hospice care. Allied Services Hospice is proud to be recognized as a 5-star hospice by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. In addition, in a 2023 survey, Allied Services Hospice & Palliative Care ranked in the top 10% of all hospices nationwide.

"Words cannot begin to express how thankful we are for your compassionate care. You treated Mom with respect and dignity and quickly became part of our family." Bill S.of Jefferson Twp.

Compassionate care team

A multidisciplinary team of caring provides Hospice Care, compassionate professionals focused on the comfort, needs, and wishes of the patient. The Hospice team includes a Medical Director, Registered Nurses, Case Managers, Medical Social Workers, Certified Nurse Aides, Spiritual and Bereavement Counselors, and specially-trained volunteers. In addition, other professionals are available to meet specific needs, including physical, occupational, speech, and respiratory therapists, dietitians, and pharmacists.

Personalized Hospice Care

Understanding where and when hospice care is offered is the first step to understanding the choices you or your loved one has when it comes to the end-of-life journey. Across the four levels of hospice care, the philosophy remains the same: to offer expert medical care and emotional support that respects the unique wishes of the patient. A hospice patient may experience all four or only one, depending on their needs and wishes.

Hospice Care at Home

Once patients have accepted hospice care, they will receive routine care to increase their comfort and quality of life as much as possible. Routine care may include pain management, symptom management, emotional and spiritual counseling for the patient and family, assistance with daily tasks, and nutritional and therapeutic services. Routine hospice care can be provided wherever you call home, whether in a skilled nursing facility, assisted living facility, memory care, or your own home. Care will be intermittent based on the patient's needs.

Continuous Hospice Care

Sometimes called crisis care, continuous hospice care may be necessary when a patient experiences a medical crisis, or their symptoms require more intensive management. Round-the-clock nursing or extended periods of nursing support during this kind of medical crisis benefit the patient and the family, allowing caregivers to step back from the hands-on care and focus on being with their loved one in a family role.

Inpatient Hospice Care

Inpatient care may be necessary if a patient's symptoms can no longer be managed at home. The goal here is to control severe pain and stabilize symptoms so that the patient can return home, if possible. In addition, some patients may spend their final days in one of our hospice centers as a neutral, safe space to be with family and loved ones.

Respite Care

Our inpatient patient hospice centers also offer respite care for home hospice patients. These occasional, short-term stays can provide a much-needed break for loved ones providing care at home while allowing patients to receive appropriate, round-the-clock symptom management.
