Scoliosis Rehabilitation Scranton and Wilkes-Barre

Certified Schroth Method Therapists

Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine that usually occurs during childhood. Patients with scoliosis have a spine that bends to the side, rather than the natural vertical shape with a bend that gives the spine its flexibility. Children usually start showing symptoms of scoliosis right before puberty. If your child is in the early stages of scoliosis, you may notice that they have uneven shoulders or hips. The condition can be painful and lead to abnormal posture if not treated.

Traditionally, bracing and surgery were the only treatments for scoliosis were back braces and surgery. Today, a nonsurgical treatment option known as the Schroth Method is available.

What is the Schroth Method?

The Schroth Method is a rehabilitation program that uses exercises to help the spine regain its natural curve and shape. Patients work with a certified Schroth Method therapist who instructs them on curve-specific exercises. This treatment is often preferred by patients because it does not usually require a back brace and it can prevent the need for surgery. The Schroth Method can be used by patients of all ages and during all stages of scoliosis.

The Schroth Method therapy program can result in:

  • Reduction or arresting of curve progression
  • Improved posture
  • Improved core stability and strength
  • Improved self appearance
  • Easier breathing
  • Less pain
  • Improved overall movement patterns and function
  • Improved self-management & understanding of the spine
  • Better spine and pelvic alignment
  • Family and patient education
